X-23, also known as Laura Kinney, is one of the most compelling characters in the X-Men universe. X-23 was created as part of a secret project to replicate the Weapon X experiment that gave Wolverine his adamantium claws and enhanced abilities. Dr. Sarah Kinney, a scientist working on the project, was forced to use Wolverine’s DNA to create a female clone after 22 failed attempts—hence the name X-23. Unlike Logan, she was trained from birth to be a living weapon, enduring brutal conditioning and psychological torment that shaped her into a lethal assassin.
Despite this dark beginning, X-23 eventually broke free from her handlers and sought a new path, leading her to cross paths with the X-Men. She found a mentor in Wolverine, who accepted her as family and helped her reclaim her humanity. Over time, she developed meaningful relationships with characters like Jubilee and became a key member of various X-Men teams, including X-Force and All-New X-Men. As a clone of Wolverine, X-23 possesses similar powers, including enhanced healing, superhuman agility, and heightened senses.
However, her fighting style and abilities make her unique. Instead of three claws per hand like Logan, she has two retractable adamantium claws in each hand and an additional one in each foot—giving her an unpredictable edge in battle. After Wolverine’s death in Death of Wolverine (2014), Laura took up the mantle of Wolverine, proving herself worthy of the iconic name. As The All-New Wolverine, she displayed not only her combat prowess but also her deep compassion, protecting the innocent while struggling with her past. This role solidified her place as a mainstay in the X-Men mythos.
X-23 has appeared in various Marvel games, including Marvel vs. Capcom 3, X-Men: Destiny, and Marvel Future Fight. Her popularity soared further after Logan (2017), where she was portrayed by Dafne Keen.
